Not a Video Game Club

Middle school esports has quietly turned into a career pipeline. The districts still debating whether it’s real are already behind.

Joshua Kell planned for ten kids. He scheduled a Saturday morning workshop on shoutcasting and tournament operations for a local district and figured thirty would be a generous turnout.

Then the buses pulled in. Eighty-six middle schoolers climbed out — on a Saturday — to learn how to run a broadcast, work a camera, and keep better stats.

“These kids were engaged,” said Kell, CEO of Esports Integration and Horizon AVL, which builds esports programs for schools from elementary through college. “They wanted to be in front of the camera. They wanted to understand how to do stats better.”

None of them were there to play a video game. That distinction is the whole story of where scholastic esports is headed.

From wild west to just west

Speaking on a recent LinkedIn Live session hosted with Camden County College, Kell and his co-panelists described an industry that has grown up fast. Five or six years ago, college esports was chaos — student-run teams playing out of computer labs, half a season’s games forfeited, no consistent rules.

“We’ve taken one of the wilds off of the wild, wild west,” said Sean Dwyer, esports director at Camden County College and co-coordinator of its esports production degree. Where there were once six or seven competing leagues, now there are three or four major players with standardized eligibility rules, GPA requirements, and credit minimums. Esports players are treated like student athletes, because that is what the structure now demands.

David Bruno, associate dean of academic and workforce partnerships at Camden County College, put the growth in blunt terms: five years ago you could count the collegiate programs in the Delaware Valley on two hands. Today, a college without an esports program is the outlier.

That maturation at the top is what unlocked everything below it. A pipeline needs somewhere to empty out.

The scholastic distinction

Here is the line Kell draws that most schools miss: there are esports programs, and there are scholastic esports programs. They are not the same thing.

Any school can stand up an after-school club and call it esports. What is actually driving adoption is the academic component — coursework built around gaming as the delivery vehicle rather than the destination. Kell’s team runs curriculum from fifth grade through twelfth. An introductory course covers budgeting, finance, and SWOT analysis. Middle schoolers do not necessarily know that is what they are doing. They absorb it because it arrives wrapped in something they already care about.

One middle school he is currently building is getting a full Unreal Engine volume — an LED backdrop stage, the same virtual production technology used on major film sets. And not to teach game development. The pitch is broader: Unreal Engine feeds into production, graphic design, and architecture. The software is a career on-ramp that happens to look like a toy.

“We’re not training gamers,” Bruno said. The point is the transferable skill set — the one that turns into a cybersecurity role, a marketing director job, a data analytics position.

The handshake

Can a school run just the competitive side? Yes, Kell said — but expect it to wobble. Students graduate. The one passionate advisor takes another job. Programs built on enthusiasm alone plateau or collapse.

The durable model is a cycle: classroom coursework that supports the after-school team, and competition that generates takeaways feeding back into academic outcomes. “It should be done as a handshake between the two,” Kell said.

Esports makes that handshake easier than traditional athletics ever has. Bruno noted that when his daughter finished her middle school lacrosse season, there was no production crew, no pregame show, no student analyst breaking down stats. In esports, the digital content is already there. Adding a broadcast team, a marketing arm, a social media operation costs almost nothing incremental — and it mirrors how professional sports organizations actually staff themselves.

The unglamorous part

Kell’s first question to any district is not about hardware. It is: what are your goals?

He pushes to get principals and superintendents in the room, not just the teacher who volunteered. When administration, faculty, and students each imagine a different destination, the ship rows in circles. From there comes a three-to-five-year plan covering year-over-year budgeting, because the most common failure is a district that funds the build-out and has nothing left for year two.

Realistic timeline: a few months for planning, roughly six for a full design and implementation.

Meanwhile the field keeps filling in. New Jersey’s first esports college combine brought forty high school all-stars to Brookdale Community College to compete for scholarships in front of recruiters — an event that would have been unthinkable three years earlier.

The needle, as Kell put it, has moved dramatically. The districts still waiting to see if this is real are the ones now playing catch-up.
