What is esports?
This is a question I get asked on weekly basis, and when I founded the Esports Trade Association (ESTA), I really did not know the answer to that question either.
From 2010-2017, I led the Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FSTA), and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. But in early 2017, I realized the fantasy sports industry was changing, and it was not the right place for me anymore. After spending almost 10 years in the industry, I was at a point in my life where I needed to figure what was next. So I did what most people would do, I started having conversations with everyone I know. I talked with colleagues, friends, and family, and what I heard over and over again was the next “big thing” was esports.
With growth of 51.7% from 2015, the esports industry is projected to exceed $1 billion by the end of 2019 and it is estimated that 427 million people worldwide will be watching some form of esports, per Newzoo projections.
As someone who is passionate about serving others and has spent her career building and transforming innovative organizations and associations, I saw the esports industry as promising uncharted territory and by bringing the players, teams, leagues, and stakeholders together, I could support the spirit of team collaboration for all involved. And frankly, why wouldn’t I want to get involved in the fastest growing industry in the world?
In 2018, ESTA was formed with the vision to legitimize and streamline the esports industry and provide an authentic association where like-minded, dedicated fans, players, and organizations can work together to thrive as an industry. Through forward-thinking professional development programs, networking opportunities, relevant industry research, and valuable tools and resources, ESTA will promote, protect, and advance the broader interests of the esports community, but we need your help!
I invite you to get involved with ESTA as a member, sponsor, or partner. Together, we have the opportunity to shape this industry during a time of unprecedented growth and to make a substantial difference for generations to come.
I am pleased to report that I can the answer the question “What is esports?” and with that knowledge, I am excited to a part of this journey with all of you.
